Choose the right visa route

Your requirements depend on your nationality, travel document, reason for travel, length of stay and whether you qualify for a visa exemption. Check the official rules for your own situation before booking non-refundable travel.

Use the official portal: Albania’s Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs identifies e-visa.al as the official online visa application website. Be cautious of unofficial websites that imitate government visa services.
Short visit

Tourism, family visits and business

A Type C visa is for short stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Depending on the case, it may be issued for single, double or multiple entry. The visa’s validity and permitted stay are not the same thing.

Transit

Passing through Albania

Transit requirements depend on your nationality, route and whether you need to enter Albania during the journey. Confirm whether a visa is needed for your specific itinerary before departure.

Long stay

Study, family and other long-term purposes

A Type D visa is intended for eligible stays exceeding 90 days in a 180-day period where a visa is required before applying for a residence permit. The residence procedure may be a separate step.

Employment

Work and residence planning

Work-related stays can involve purpose-specific visa and work or residence permissions. Do not assume a tourist visa permits employment. Check the applicable requirements with the Albanian authorities before accepting work.

Who may enter Albania without a visa?

Albania provides visa-free entry to nationals of certain countries and to some travellers who hold qualifying visas or residence permits. The Ministry’s published rules include certain valid multiple-entry Schengen visas that have previously been used, qualifying residence permits, and certain multiple-entry visas or residence permits issued by the EU, United States or United Kingdom, subject to conditions and exceptions.

Other exemptions can apply to specific nationalities or travel-document holders. The conditions may include using the qualifying visa in the issuing area before arrival and leaving Albania before that document expires. Exceptions apply, so read the official rule carefully.

Do not assume that holding a visa for another country automatically gives you visa-free access to Albania. Check your passport, the exact visa or residence document you hold, its prior use and its remaining validity against the official guidance.

Passport validity

The Ministry states that travellers who do not require a visa generally need a passport or travel document valid for at least three months beyond their intended departure from Albania and issued within the previous ten years. For visa-required travellers, the published rule calls for validity extending at least three months beyond the requested visa’s expiry and at least two blank pages. Confirm the applicable rule for your case.

Common documents to prepare

Exact requirements depend on the visa category and purpose. Albania’s official guidance lists core documents and additional evidence for different application types. The authority may ask for further information.

Core application documents

  • Online visa application form, printed and signed when instructed
  • Recent passport-sized photograph
  • Copy of a valid passport or accepted travel document
  • Travel medical insurance for the intended visa period
  • Parent or legal guardian consent for applicants under 18, where required

Tourism and short visits

  • Return or onward ticket booking
  • Hotel booking or evidence of accommodation
  • Bank statements or other proof of sufficient funds
  • Evidence of employment or other ties supporting return, where requested
  • Invitation and host information, if applicable

Business or official travel

  • Invitation from the host or organisation, where required
  • Details proving the purpose of the business visit
  • Evidence of the inviting entity’s legal status, if applicable
  • Accommodation and financial support information

Study, work or family reunification

  • Admission or enrolment evidence for study
  • Employment, work-permit or activity-specific documents, as applicable
  • Proof of funds, tuition or accommodation where required
  • Family relationship documents for reunification
  • Police record or legalised documents if specifically required

This is a preparation guide, not a complete official checklist. Use the checklist shown in the official application process for your category.

How to apply for an Albanian visa

Check whether a visa is required

Review the Ministry’s visa regime information using your nationality and travel-document details. Confirm whether any exemption applies to your circumstances.

Select the correct category

Choose the visa type that matches your purpose, such as tourism, business, study, employment, family reunion or another eligible reason.

Complete the official online application

Use the official e-Visa portal. Complete the required fields carefully and upload the documents requested for your category.

Prepare for any consular follow-up

Follow instructions about originals, signed forms, fees, appointment arrangements or personal attendance. Requirements can vary by case and by the mission handling the application.

Pay the applicable fee and monitor the application

Use only the payment method specified by the official portal or responsible mission. Respond promptly if additional information is requested.

Wait for the decision before finalising travel

The Ministry’s published application guidance says a decision may be issued within 15 days after acceptance, with exceptional cases taking up to 30 days. Treat this as official guidance rather than a guarantee and check the current estimate.

Carry supporting documents when travelling

Border officials may ask for an invitation, return ticket, accommodation confirmation, proof of funds or other documents relevant to your visit. A visa does not guarantee entry.

Visa fees and processing times

Visa fees are determined under the applicable rules and can depend on reciprocity, category and individual circumstances. Check the current amount, currency, payment method and any exemption directly in the official application process.

The Ministry’s published guidance indicates processing may take up to 15 days after acceptance and, in exceptional cases, up to 30 days. Appointment availability, incomplete documents and additional checks can affect the overall timeline, so apply well in advance.

Work, study and residence

Employment

Confirm the visa category and work authorisation required for your proposed activity before beginning work. The process may require documents from an Albanian employer and other authorities. A visa or job offer alone should not be treated as permission to work.

Study

Applicants may need an admission document, evidence of funds for living costs and tuition, health insurance and accommodation details. Ask the educational institution and authorities which visa and residence steps apply to your course.

Family reunion

Family routes can require proof of the relationship, an invitation, accommodation and financial support evidence from the family member in Albania. Confirm the current requirements for the specific relationship and residence status.

After arrival

Respect the permitted length and purpose of your stay. If you intend to remain longer, check the residence-permit process and any application deadlines with the competent Albanian authorities.

Official resources and useful links

Use official government pages for current eligibility, forms, fees and decisions. Albania’s Ministry has warned applicants to avoid unauthorised websites that imitate official visa services.
