Iceland is part of the Schengen Area. Whether you need a visa depends mainly on your nationality, travel document, reason for travel and intended length of stay. A visitor visa is not the same as permission to live or work in Iceland.

Choose the right route

Short-stay Schengen visa

For eligible visitors travelling for tourism, visiting family or friends, business meetings, or other permitted short-stay purposes. The general Schengen limit is up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen Area, subject to the conditions of your permission.

Check whether your passport requires a visa and follow the Iceland-specific application instructions for your place of residence.

Work and residence

Non-EEA/EFTA nationals generally need the appropriate residence permit and work authorisation before starting employment. The route depends on the job, employer and applicable permit category.

A job offer alone does not automatically grant permission to enter, live or work in Iceland.

Study and cultural exchange

Students accepted by an eligible Icelandic educational institution may need a student residence permit. Au pair, volunteer and other cultural-exchange activities have their own requirements and application categories.

Family and longer stays

Eligible spouses, children, parents or other qualifying family members may be able to apply through a family-reunification route, depending on the sponsor’s status and the relevant rules. Other specific-purpose and short-term residence routes may exist.

Before you apply

Use the official visa and immigration portals to confirm which route fits your circumstances. Iceland’s visa administration changed in 2026: visa processing responsibility transferred to the Ministry for Foreign Affairs under the new Visa Act. Residence-permit matters remain handled through the Directorate of Immigration and the official Ísland.is service pages.

Important: Do not rely on an old application form, fee list or embassy instruction without checking it again. The correct procedure can differ by country of residence and visa category.

Common document checklist

The exact list depends on the visa or permit category. Applicants may be asked for some or all of the following:

For a short-stay visit

  • Valid passport and completed application form, where required
  • Recent photograph meeting the applicable specifications
  • Travel medical insurance, if required for the application
  • Travel itinerary and accommodation details
  • Evidence of sufficient funds for the planned stay
  • Evidence of the purpose of travel and intention to leave within the authorised period
  • Supporting documents relevant to employment, studies, family visit or business

For residence applications

  • Valid passport and the correct residence-permit application
  • Proof supporting the purpose of residence, such as admission, employment or family relationship
  • Evidence of financial support, where required
  • Health-insurance evidence and criminal-record documentation, where applicable
  • Required translations, certifications or legalisations
  • Application fee payment evidence, following the current official instructions
  • Any category-specific forms or documents requested by the authorities

This is a preparation checklist, not a guarantee that an application is complete. Follow the official checklist for your specific category and application location.

Application process

Identify your category

Decide whether you are applying for a short visit, work, study, family reunification or another residence purpose.

Check the official instructions

Confirm visa requirements for your nationality and where you must lodge the application. Use only the current government or authorised application channel.

Prepare your evidence

Collect the forms, passport, financial evidence and category-specific documents. Arrange translations or certifications if requested.

Submit and pay correctly

Follow the submission method, appointment and payment steps published for your application. Keep receipts and copies.

Allow time for processing

Processing varies by application type, workload and whether further documents are needed. Avoid non-refundable plans until you understand the risks.

Follow the decision and entry rules

If approved, check validity dates, permitted activities, entry conditions and any arrival formalities. Never work unless your permission allows it.

Fees and processing times

Visa fees and residence-permit fees are different, and the amount can depend on the application type and applicant circumstances. Residence-permit fees are published by the Directorate of Immigration; visa fees and submission arrangements should be confirmed through the Ministry for Foreign Affairs or the authorised channel for your country.

Processing times are not fixed for every applicant. Check current official estimates before applying and submit early enough to accommodate appointment availability, document requests and seasonal delays.

Work, study and settling in Iceland

Working legally

For many non-EEA/EFTA workers, the employer has a role in the application process. Confirm the relevant residence and work permit requirements before travelling or commencing work. Permission may be tied to a particular job or employer.

Students and family members

Check the specific permit requirements, application timing, financial conditions and rules for accompanying family members. Do not assume that one person’s permission automatically gives another person a right to reside or work.

For short-stay visa processing, consult the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the Iceland-specific instructions provided by the relevant embassy or authorised visa application centre.

Frequently asked questions

Do all travellers need a visa for Iceland?

No. Requirements depend on nationality and travel document. Some travellers are visa-exempt for short stays, while others must obtain a Schengen visa before travelling. Check the official requirements for your passport.

Can I work in Iceland on a tourist visa?

A short-stay visitor visa does not generally authorise employment. Check the applicable work and residence rules and obtain the required permission before starting work.

Can I stay longer than the usual short-stay period?

A longer stay normally requires an appropriate residence or other lawful permission. Eligibility and whether you may apply from inside Iceland depend on the category and your current immigration status.

How long will my application take?

There is no single timeline for every visa and residence permit. Processing varies by category, workload, completeness and additional checks. Use current official estimates and apply well in advance.

Does VIPTOURHUB guarantee approval?

No. VIPTOURHUB can assist with travel planning and booking support, but only the competent authorities can decide a visa or residence-permit application. Approval cannot be guaranteed.
