Start with the right route

The correct Polish visa or immigration route depends on your nationality, where you legally live, the purpose of travel and how long you plan to remain in Poland.

Poland is part of the Schengen Area. A short-stay Schengen visa may cover visits to Poland and other Schengen countries within the permitted stay. For a longer stay in Poland, a national visa or an appropriate residence procedure may be needed. A visa is not the same as a work permit or residence permit.

Important: Do not choose a visa category only because it appears easier to obtain. Your stated purpose and supporting documents must match the route you apply for.

Poland visa options

Short stay

Schengen visa — Type C

For eligible visitors travelling for tourism, family visits, business meetings or other permitted short-stay purposes. The general Schengen limit is up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the area, subject to the visa issued and applicable rules.

Long stay

National visa — Type D

Generally relevant where the intended stay in Poland exceeds 90 days, including certain work, study and family-related purposes. The visa’s validity and permitted stay are determined by the authorities.

Official Type D guidance ↗

Transit

Airport transit — Type A

Required only for certain nationalities and itineraries when transiting through the international zone of an airport. It normally does not permit entry into Poland or the Schengen Area.

Residence permit

Temporary, permanent or EU long-term resident status may be available only where the applicant meets the legal grounds and conditions. Residence applications follow a separate process from visa applications.

Visa exemptions depend on nationality, travel document, purpose and duration. Confirm your specific situation with official authorities before booking travel.

Who needs a visa?

Whether you need a visa depends primarily on your passport or travel document and the purpose and duration of your visit. Some travellers may enter for short stays without a visa, while others must apply before departure. Visa-free entry does not automatically authorize employment or a long-term stay.

  • Check the rules for the nationality and travel document you will use.
  • Apply through the Polish consular authority responsible for your place of legal residence and intended destination.
  • If visiting several Schengen countries, apply through the country that is your main destination; if there is no main destination, the first-entry rules may apply.
  • Check whether your route requires an airport transit visa, even if you do not plan to leave the airport transit area.

For applicants living in South Africa, the Polish Embassy’s consular section in Pretoria publishes local procedures, appointment instructions and document requirements. Applicants living elsewhere should use the Polish mission responsible for their residence.

How to apply

  1. Identify the correct visa category

Confirm whether your trip requires a Type C, Type D, transit visa or a different immigration route.
  2. Check the responsible consulate

Use the Polish mission responsible for your legal place of residence and read its current instructions.
  3. Complete the official application

Use the official e-Konsulat system when required by the relevant consular post. Follow the post’s appointment and submission instructions.
  4. Prepare supporting evidence

Gather the current checklist, originals and copies as instructed. Arrange insurance and other supporting evidence suitable for your route.
  5. Attend the appointment

Submit the application in the required manner, provide biometrics where applicable, and answer questions truthfully.

Work and study in Poland

Employment

A job offer alone does not automatically give a foreign national the right to work or reside in Poland. Depending on nationality and circumstances, the employer may need to obtain a work permit or use another lawful route, and the applicant may also need the appropriate visa or residence status.

Study

Applicants planning longer studies should check the relevant national visa requirements, proof of admission, financial support, accommodation and insurance rules. The exact evidence depends on the institution, programme and applicant’s circumstances.

Residence permits and staying longer

A visa authorizes travel or stay under its specific conditions; it is not itself a permanent residence status. Depending on the legal basis, a foreign national may be eligible to apply for temporary residence, permanent residence or EU long-term resident status.

Poland’s Office for Foreigners provides official guidance on residence procedures. The government’s MOS (Case Handling Module) information states that residence-permit applications are handled through its dedicated online system under the current process. Check the portal carefully for eligibility, required documents, fees and the method of submission before starting.

Residence eligibility and procedures depend on the individual’s legal basis and circumstances. Do not rely on a short-stay visa as permission to work or settle.

Fees and processing time

Visa fees, residence charges, appointment availability and processing times may change and can differ by category, age, nationality, consular post and individual case. Confirm the current fee and payment method on the official page for your application location.

Fees

Check the current consular fee table and whether payment must be made in a particular currency or method. Visa fees are generally not refundable simply because an application is refused.

Processing time

Processing estimates are not guarantees. Missing documents, verification, interviews, consultation or high demand may extend the wait. Allow a suitable margin before planned travel.

Check local Schengen instructions ↗

Do not purchase non-refundable flights or accommodation solely on the assumption that a visa will be approved by a particular date.

Frequently asked questions

Can I visit Poland with a Schengen visa issued by another country?

It may be possible if the visa is valid for your intended travel and you comply with its conditions. When applying, the competent country is generally the main destination of your trip. Check the visa’s territorial validity, entries and permitted stay.

Does a tourist visa allow me to work in Poland?

A tourist or short-stay visa does not, by itself, grant a general right to work. Work authorization and lawful residence requirements depend on your nationality and circumstances. Confirm the rules before accepting employment.

Does a visa guarantee entry?

No. A visa does not automatically guarantee entry. Border authorities may verify that you meet the entry conditions and may request supporting documents.

Can VIPTOURHUB guarantee visa approval?

No. Only the competent authorities decide visa and immigration applications. VIPTOURHUB can assist with travel planning and organizing supporting travel arrangements, but cannot guarantee approval.

Where should I apply if I live in South Africa?

Check the Polish Embassy in Pretoria’s official consular instructions for the visa type and your place of legal residence. Appointment methods and required documents can differ by application category.

What if my plans change or I want to stay longer?

Do not overstay or assume your visa can be extended. Check the official rules for your specific visa and situation before your permitted stay expires, and seek qualified legal advice where necessary.
