Romania Visa & Immigration Guide
Understand the main visa pathways for visiting, studying, working or joining family in Romania. Start with the official eligibility check, prepare documents for your purpose of travel, and confirm the current rules before submitting an application.
Start with the right visa route
The correct application depends on what you intend to do in Romania. Do not choose a category only because it appears easier: the purpose and supporting evidence must match your real travel plans.
Tourism, family visits and business trips
For eligible short visits, such as tourism, visiting friends or family, or certain business activities. A short-stay visa generally permits stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, subject to the applicable rules and the stay authorised.
Prepare for: travel purpose, accommodation, funds, medical insurance where required, itinerary and evidence you will leave within the permitted period.
Employment and professional activities
People intending to work usually need the relevant legal basis and long-stay visa category. Depending on the route, an employer or authorised placement agency may need to complete steps before the visa application.
Prepare for: the applicable work authorisation or approval, employment documents and category-specific supporting evidence.
Study and research
Applicants planning to study should check the study visa route and the requirements for their institution and course. Admission documentation and proof of resources may be required.
Prepare for: official admission or enrolment evidence, financial support, accommodation and other documents listed for the relevant category.
Family reunification and other purposes
Family reunification, economic or professional activities, religious activities, secondment and other purposes may have separate categories and supporting-document requirements.
Prepare for: proof that you qualify for the exact route, such as relationship records, authorisations or institutional documents where applicable.
Who needs a visa?
Visa requirements vary by citizenship and travel document. Some nationals can enter for eligible short stays without a visa, while others must obtain a visa in advance. Visa exemption does not remove border-entry conditions, and it does not automatically authorise employment or long-term residence.
Use the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ official “Do you need a visa?” tool and select your nationality, travel document and purpose. If you hold a residence permit or visa issued by another country, check whether it affects your specific route rather than assuming it replaces a Romanian visa.
Documents commonly requested
The official checklist for your visa category takes priority. Depending on the application, you may be asked for some or all of the following:
| Document or evidence | What to check |
|---|---|
| Valid travel document | Validity, issue date, available pages and any category-specific passport rules. |
| Completed application | Use the official eVisa portal and provide accurate, consistent details. |
| Photographs and biometrics | Follow the current size and appointment instructions; in-person attendance may be required. |
| Purpose of travel | Itinerary, invitation, hotel booking, admission evidence, employment documents or other proof relevant to the route. |
| Financial means | Evidence of funds or financial support where required by the selected category. |
| Accommodation and insurance | Provide evidence that meets the applicable visa checklist and covers the intended trip where required. |
| Additional civil or legal documents | For example, family relationship records, criminal-record certificates, translations or legalisation where required. |
Do not submit a generic checklist as if it were complete. Official requirements differ between visa categories and individual cases; the consulate may request additional evidence.
How the application process works
Identify the correct route
Confirm whether you need a visa and select the category that matches your purpose and intended length of stay.
Read the official checklist
Review the supporting documents for that category and the Romanian mission responsible for your place of residence or legal stay.
Complete the online file
Use the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ eVisa portal, upload the requested information and follow its validation instructions.
Attend the consular appointment
After the online file is validated, follow the mission’s instructions for appointment scheduling, originals, copies, biometrics and any interview.
Pay the applicable fee and wait
Check the current fee and accepted payment method with the official mission. Processing time varies and may depend on workload, completeness and any required consultation or approval.
Check the decision and entry conditions
Review the visa validity, number of entries and permitted stay. A visa does not itself guarantee admission at the border.
Processing times and fees
There is no single processing time that applies to every Romanian visa application. The official eVisa FAQ advises applicants to apply well ahead of travel; it notes that short-stay applications may be submitted at least three weeks before departure and no more than three months in advance, and recommends submitting long-stay applications at least 45 days ahead where possible. These are planning guidelines, not a promise of a decision by a particular date.
Fees depend on visa type, applicable rules and possible exemptions or bilateral arrangements. Check the official portal or competent consular mission for the current fee and payment instructions. Avoid relying on old fee tables or unofficial estimates.
Working, studying and staying longer
Working in Romania
Do not travel on a tourist basis expecting that it automatically allows employment. Check the specific employment route, whether an employer or authorised agency must begin the process, and which authorisation is required before applying. After arrival, eligible long-stay residents may need to apply for a residence permit through the Romanian General Inspectorate for Immigration.
Study in Romania
Confirm the institution and course documentation, study visa requirements and any post-arrival residence formalities. A Romanian long-stay visa is not a general residence authorisation for other EU countries.
Family reunification
Eligibility and supporting documents depend on the sponsor’s status and the family relationship. Obtain the current official checklist and confirm whether prior approval is needed.
Residence permit and extensions
Long-stay visa holders who intend to remain may need to apply for a residence permit or extension with the Romanian immigration authority before the relevant deadline. Follow the current rules for your category and keep proof of submission.

Frequently asked questions
Can I apply for a Romanian visa online?
You can begin the application file through the official eVisa portal. Online submission does not necessarily mean the entire process is remote; applicants generally need to follow the competent mission’s instructions and may have to attend in person.
How early should I apply?
Apply as early as the official window permits. The Romanian eVisa FAQ recommends planning ahead and describes different recommended lead times for short-stay and long-stay applications. Appointment availability and individual case requirements can affect the timeline.
Does a Romanian visa guarantee entry?
No. A visa permits travel to the border subject to its terms, but border authorities can still verify whether the entry conditions are met.
Can I work in Romania with a visitor visa?
A visitor visa does not automatically authorise employment. Confirm the correct work route and required authorisations before making employment or travel commitments.
Can I stay longer after arriving?
That depends on the visa and your legal basis for residence. Short-stay visa holders generally cannot simply extend their stay, while eligible long-stay residents may have a route to a residence permit or extension. Check the immigration authority’s current rules and deadlines.
Can VIPTOURHUB guarantee my visa approval?
No. VIPTOURHUB can assist with travel planning and booking support, but only the relevant Romanian authorities assess and decide visa applications. No approval, job offer or permit can be guaranteed.
