Japan Work Visa Guide | Requirements, Visa Types & How to Apply
Japan Work Visa Guide
Explore Japan’s work visa categories, employer sponsorship, Certificate of Eligibility, Specified Skilled Worker programme and application requirements.
Whether you are a professional, technical specialist, experienced worker or applicant interested in an eligible skilled-work programme, choosing the correct residence status is the first step.
Important: Japan does not have one universal work visa. Your appropriate visa and residence status depend on the job, your qualifications, the receiving organisation and the activities you will perform.
This guide is for general information and travel planning. It is not an official government publication and does not guarantee employment or visa approval.
Japan work visa options
Japan offers several work-related residence statuses. Each has specific conditions, and not every category is suitable for every occupation.
Engineer / Specialist in Humanities / International Services
A common category for eligible professional work such as engineering, IT, translation, interpreting, marketing, design and certain international business services. Applicants must meet the applicable qualification, experience and employment conditions.
Specified Skilled Worker (SSW)
For eligible workers with the required skills and, in general, Japanese language ability in designated industrial fields experiencing labour shortages. Skills tests and language tests may be required, subject to exemptions.
Highly Skilled Professional
For qualifying highly skilled professionals who meet Japan’s applicable criteria. Certain routes use a points-based system covering factors such as education, professional experience, income and achievements.
Intra-company Transferee
For eligible employees transferring to a Japanese office from a qualifying related overseas business. The employment history, company relationship and proposed duties must meet the relevant rules.
Skilled Labor
For certain specialised skilled occupations specified under Japanese immigration rules. The required experience, evidence and eligible activities depend on the profession.
Business Manager and other categories
Japan also has residence statuses for eligible business managers, professors, researchers, instructors, medical professionals, entertainers and other specified activities. These are not interchangeable and have distinct criteria.
Who may qualify for a Japan work visa?
Eligibility depends on the residence status and the actual duties you will perform. A job title alone does not establish eligibility.
Depending on the category, you may need:
- A genuine job offer: Many work categories require an employment contract or an eligible receiving organisation in Japan.
- Relevant qualifications: A degree, vocational qualification or professional credential may be required for the intended work.
- Relevant work experience: Certain categories require evidence of prior professional or occupational experience.
- Appropriate job duties: The work must fall within the activities permitted under the selected residence status.
- Salary and employment conditions: Your employment must meet the applicable immigration and labour requirements.
- Japanese language ability: Some programmes, including many Specified Skilled Worker routes, require a language test or accepted alternative evidence.
- Skills assessment: A specified skilled-work field may require a designated skills examination or another accepted qualification.
- Identity and supporting documents: You must provide accurate records and complete the required immigration and visa procedures.

Specified Skilled Worker programme
Japan’s Specified Skilled Worker programme is intended to accept foreign workers with the necessary skills in designated industrial fields. It is different from a general professional work visa.
Specified Skilled Worker (i)
Applicants generally need a qualifying job offer from an eligible receiving organisation, the required occupational skills and the required Japanese language ability. Accepted tests, exemptions and sector-specific requirements vary.
Eligible fields and examination arrangements can change. Review the official programme information to confirm which occupations are open to applications and what tests are required.
Specified Skilled Worker (ii)
This category is intended for workers who meet the higher skills requirements specified for eligible fields. It has different conditions from category (i), including different rules concerning the length of stay and family accompaniment.
Family and support arrangements
Family accompaniment is generally more restricted under Specified Skilled Worker (i). Under Specified Skilled Worker (ii), eligible spouses and children may be able to accompany the worker, subject to the applicable requirements.
Certificate of Eligibility (COE)
Many people applying for a long-term work visa first obtain a Certificate of Eligibility from Japan’s immigration authorities. The COE indicates that the proposed activities have been reviewed against relevant landing conditions.
How it usually works
- The applicant secures an eligible job or other qualifying arrangement in Japan.
- The employer or another eligible representative in Japan may submit the COE application, depending on the circumstances and rules.
- Immigration authorities review the application and supporting evidence.
- Once the COE is issued, the applicant follows the visa application instructions of the Japanese embassy or consulate responsible for their place of residence.
The Certificate of Eligibility has a limited validity period. Follow the current instructions printed on the certificate and provided by the relevant Japanese authorities.
Documents you may need
The exact checklist depends on your residence status, nationality and the Japanese mission handling your application. Common documents may include:
| Document or evidence | What to check |
|---|---|
| Valid passport | Confirm validity and the travel document requirements of the Japanese mission. |
| Visa application form | Complete the form required by the mission responsible for your place of residence. |
| Passport-size photograph | Follow the current photo specifications and age requirements published by the mission. |
| Certificate of Eligibility | Provide the COE or accepted electronic/printed version if required for your application. |
| Employment contract or offer | Check the employer’s details, role, salary, duties and working conditions. |
| Educational qualifications | Supply degree certificates, transcripts or vocational credentials if required for the category. |
| Employment history | Provide evidence of relevant professional experience when required. |
| Skills and language test results | Specified Skilled Worker applicants may need accepted skills and Japanese language test evidence, subject to exemptions. |
| Employer or receiving organisation records | Additional company documents may be required for the COE or residence-status application. |
| Family relationship documents | Dependants may need marriage or birth certificates and their own supporting documents. |
| Additional supporting evidence | The mission or immigration authorities may request further documents according to the case. |
Do not assume every applicant must submit every document listed above. Follow the current checklist for your visa category and country of application.
How to apply for a Japan work visa
For many long-term work applications, the process begins with the receiving organisation in Japan and continues through the Japanese embassy or consulate responsible for your residence.
Japan work visa fees and processing times
Costs and processing times depend on your visa category, nationality, place of application, COE status and the completeness of your documents. Check the latest official fees before paying.
| Cost or timeframe | What applicants should know |
|---|---|
| Visa issuance fee | Japan revised its general consular visa fee schedule for applications accepted from 1 July 2026. The applicable fee depends on the type of visa, nationality and the mission where you apply. |
| Local currency and payment | Fees are generally collected in the currency of the country or region where the issuing Japanese mission is located. Local instructions determine the exact amount and payment method. |
| Agency handling fees | If the mission requires or permits an approved agency, a separate handling fee may apply. Verify the agency through official mission information. |
| Certificate of Eligibility | The COE application itself generally has no government application fee, but document preparation or other related services may involve costs. |
| COE processing time | Processing varies by residence status and application. Some programme guidance advises applicants to allow several months; apply well in advance. |
| Visa processing | Processing times depend on the mission, application circumstances and whether additional documents or examination are required. |
Visa issuance fees are different from employer recruitment costs, skills tests, translations, travel expenses and other costs related to finding employment. Verify which expenses are legitimate and who is responsible for them.

Can your spouse and children join you?
Family members may be able to apply for an appropriate dependent status, but the rules depend on the worker’s residence category and the circumstances of the family.
Eligible family applications may require passports, marriage or birth certificates, proof of the principal worker’s status and evidence of the family relationship.
Family accompaniment is generally restricted under Specified Skilled Worker (i), subject to the applicable rules. Specified Skilled Worker (ii) and several professional work categories have different family provisions.
Do not assume a spouse automatically receives permission to work. Family members must follow the rules for their own status and obtain any additional permission required for employment.
Changing employers, extending your stay and permanent residence
Changing employers or duties
Your residence status is tied to permitted activities. Before changing employers or job duties, check whether the new work is covered by your current status and whether notification or an immigration application is required. Specified Skilled Worker employees must follow the applicable rules for changing receiving organisations.

Extending your period of stay
Some work statuses can be extended if you continue to meet the requirements. Apply for an extension before your authorised period of stay expires and follow the official instructions.
Permanent residence
Some foreign residents may qualify for permanent residence after meeting the relevant residence, conduct, financial and other requirements. Certain highly skilled professionals may qualify under special provisions, subject to the applicable rules.
A work visa does not automatically grant permanent residence or Japanese citizenship.
How to avoid Japan job and visa scams
Be careful with online recruiters, social media job offers and anyone promising guaranteed Japanese employment or visa approval.
- Verify the employer’s identity and business details independently.
- Ask for written details of the job, salary, working hours and location.
- Check which residence status applies to the proposed work.
- For Specified Skilled Worker applications, verify the relevant skills tests, language tests and receiving-organisation requirements.
- Do not pay for fabricated COEs, fake employment contracts or false qualification documents.
- Be cautious of guaranteed visa approvals, guaranteed jobs or claims of special access to immigration officers.
- Check any recruitment or sending organisation against the official requirements applicable to your country and programme.
- Keep copies of your contract, application records, correspondence and receipts.
The official Specified Skilled Worker portal provides information about finding an employer, relevant country procedures and the steps to working in Japan.

Frequently asked questions
Can I apply for a Japan work visa without a job offer?
Most ordinary work categories require a qualifying job or receiving organisation. Some other programmes have different rules, but Japan does not offer a universal open work visa for anyone who wants to look for a job. Check the official route that applies to you.
Can South African citizens apply for a Japan work visa?
South African citizens may apply if they meet the conditions of the relevant Japanese residence and visa category. Nationality alone does not guarantee approval. Check the instructions of the Japanese mission responsible for your residence.
Do I need Japanese language skills?
Language requirements depend on the category. Many Specified Skilled Worker routes require Japanese language evidence, while other professional work categories have different conditions. Japanese language skills can also be helpful for employment and everyday life.
What is a Certificate of Eligibility?
A COE is a document issued through Japan’s immigration process to confirm that the proposed activities have been reviewed against relevant landing conditions. It supports a visa application but does not guarantee visa issuance.
How much does a Japan work visa cost?
The fee depends on the visa type, nationality and the Japanese mission where you apply. Japan revised its general consular fee schedule for applications accepted from 1 July 2026. Check the current official fee page and local mission instructions.
How long does the Japan work visa process take?
The total process depends on the COE, the visa application, document completeness and any additional checks. Apply well in advance and check current guidance from the relevant immigration authority and Japanese mission.
Can I work in Japan on a tourist visa?
A Temporary Visitor status does not generally authorise ordinary paid employment. You need the appropriate immigration status and permission for the work you intend to perform.
